The Acutely Injured Knee:
Advanced assessment and care
Registration is now OPEN
Saturday, April 18, 2026
University of Calgary
Sport Medicine Centre
376 Collegiate Blvd NW, Calgary, AB
You assess knees every week.
But how confident are you in your diagnosis at the first visit?
The knee is one of the most commonly injured joints in clinical practice. Because of that familiarity, it’s also one of the easiest joints to become overly comfortable with.
Early in your career, you’re building confidence. Later in your career, you rely on experience.
But experience alone doesn’t guarantee precision and confidence isn’t always the same as clarity.
The Acutely Injured Knee Course isn’t about adding another rehab technique or special test to your toolbox.
It’s about strategically strengthening the foundation your clinical decisions are built on.
Through probabilistic clinical reasoning, structured examination frameworks, and real-world case analysis, you’ll refine how you think through acute knee injuries.
You will strengthen your differentials, improve test application & interpretation, develop a systematic, defensible approach to diagnosis, and implement evidence-informed management strategies ensuring every patient receives timely, effective, and high-quality care.
Because expert-level care isn’t about doing more tests.
It’s about knowing exactly: What you’re ruling in. What you’re ruling out. And why.
Whether you’re early in practice and want to accelerate your clinical development, or years into practice and ready to recalibrate your assessment process, this course will challenge, refine, and elevate the way you approach the acutely injured knee.
You won’t just leave with more knowledge.
You’ll leave with diagnostic confidence that’s earned.
Practical. Hands-on. Clinically relevant.
This is not a lecture-based course.
You’ll work through real clinical case studies drawn directly from practice. You’ll move step-by-step through differential diagnoses. You’ll refine your clinical process in real time.
Every concept is applied, so you leave not just understanding the framework, but knowing how to execute it confidently in your own clinic.
The course is exclusively open to certified athletic therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, physicians, and osteopaths, ensuring focused, clinically relevant discussions throughout the day.
If acute knee injuries are part of your caseload, this course will strengthen how you approach them from first presentation to primary management decisions.
Spots are intentionally limited to preserve hands-on learning and meaningful clinical discussion.
Enroll now and become the go-to knee injury expert in your clinical practice.
Raise the Standard of Your Acute Knee Assessments
By the end of the course you WILL be able to:
Understand the role of knee alignment and how it affects injury severity & management
Know when and where to refer patients with a knee injury
Recognize red flags and exceptions (skeletally immature, fractures, tendon ruptures, etc.)
Note: This course does not cover rehabilitation or exercise protocols for patients with acute knee injuries.

Instructor
Meryl Wheeler
MEd, BKin, CAT(Ret.), NPE
A retired Athletic Therapist and Non-Physician Expert (NPE) in Acute Knee Injuries. She is also the coordinator of the Speciality Clinics at the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre. Over the past 18 years Meryl has evaluated over 15,000 knees and has been directly involved in the training and mentoring of NPE’s, sport medicine fellowship candidates, and other allied health professionals in the evaluation and management of acute knee injuries.
I have known Meryl Wheeler as a student, an athletic therapist, a teacher and as a colleague for 28 years. She has dedicated her life to the care of patients and the teaching of other health care workers and students. She is an outstanding clinician and teacher. The development and implementation of a continuing education course on acute knee injuries provides tremendous value to other clinicians looking to further their knee knowledge and skills in this difficult and important area of musculoskeletal care.
I have known Meryl & worked closely with her in caring for many knee injured patients. I know her to have excellent physical examination skills with acute knee injuries and is adept at management of this injury. I have also see her train colleagues to be effective co-workers. As such. I trust not only her knowledge and expertise, but also her ability to teach and mentor other therapists in their pursuit of advanced clinical skills.
I have taken several ortho courses and this was the first one where I have left feeling confident in how to properly assess an ACL injury. Would highly recommend to other physios
It was truly one of the most informative and applicable courses I’ve taken in my career.
