Our Team
Meryl Wheeler
Meryl Wheeler is a Certified Athletic Therapist (Retired) and Non-Physician Expert (NPE) in Acute Knee Injuries. She is the Clinical Coordinator Lead of the Specialty Clinics at the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre, which include the Acute Knee Injury Clinic, Acute Sport Injury Clinic, Acute Sport Concussion Clinic, and the Shoulder Clinic. Additionally, she was a lecturer at Mount Royal University (MRU) for 20 years.
After certifying as an Athletic Therapist Meryl pursued her passion for educating others by seeking out positions and opportunities where she imparts her knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching on a variety of injury, wellness, and fitness topics. In the spring of 2000 she embarked on a 20 year career in teaching as a part-time lecturer with MRU. Meryl taught extensively at MRU in both the Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma Program within the Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension, and in the Health and Education programs within the Faculty of Health, Community, and Education. Her love of teaching led her to pursue an MEd in Education specializing in adult, community, and higher education.
Like most AT’s, Meryl started her career working as both an on-site field therapist and clinician. In 2008, Meryl advanced her expertise as a clinician starting at the UofC Sport Medicine Centre as an NPE in acute knee injuries. She is a founding member of the Acute Knee Injury Clinic and helped develop its successful launch.
Over the past 16 years Meryl has evaluated over 14,500 knees and has been directly involved in the training and mentoring of NPE’s, sport medicine fellowship candidates, and other allied health professionals in the evaluation and management of acute knee injuries.
With MSK Masterclass, Meryl merges her passion for teaching and her expertise in knee injuries. The continuing education courses offered through MSK Masterclass are designed to equip allied health professionals with the skills and confidence needed to accurately and confidently assess and diagnose acute knee injuries.
Meryl resides in Calgary with her husband enjoying fitness, golf, wine, and travel.

I have known Meryl for several years and worked closely with her in caring for many knee injured patients. I know her to have excellent physical examination skills with acute knee injuries and is adept at management of this injury. I have also seen her train colleagues to be effective co-workers. As such, I trust not only her knowledge and expertise with the acutely injured knee, but also her ability to teach and mentor other therapists in their pursuit of advanced clinical skills.
